Jesus entered the Temple and began to drive out all the people buying and selling animals for sacrifice. He knocked over the tables of the money changers and the chairs of those selling doves. He said to them, “The Scriptures declare, ‘My Temple will be called a house of prayer,’ but you have turned it into a den of thieves!” – Matthew 21:12-13 (NLT)
The social order that Jesus threatened in the previous Scripture is under full blown assault by Jesus from this moment forward. He starts by attacking the exorbitant prices being charged as sojourners exchanged their money to offer gifts to God and as urban and poorer rural people had to buy sacrificial animals at the temple. The money changers and merchants were making large sums of money from the prices they were charging. So, the uproar from Palm Sunday was well warranted, especially if you were in the privileged class. The establishment needed to be on guard. Jesus was upsetting their social order.
What are some sacred traditions that you hold more important than God’s command to look after the poor and afflicted? Who are people in your life that you hold more important than Jesus? Could possessions or wealth be more important to you than following Jesus?
