The blind and the lame came to him in the Temple, and he healed them. The leading priests and the teachers of religious law saw these wonderful miracles and heard even the children in the Temple shouting, “Praise God for the Son of David.” But the leaders were indignant. They asked Jesus, “Do you hear what these children are saying?” “Yes,” Jesus replied. “Haven’t you ever read the Scriptures? For they say, ‘You have taught children and infants to give you praise.’” Then he returned to Bethany, where he stayed overnight. – Matthew 21:14-17 (NLT)
Have you ever been so focused on a prize that you have difficulty seeing anything else happening? You can have a highly successful businessperson or athlete who is so focused on success and winning that they cannot see a relationship or family falling part. People become singularly focused and lose eyes that see when other things in their lives are falling apart. That’s what is happened to the religious leaders during Jesus’ ministry. They became focused on how much Jesus preached about caring for others and sacrificing today so that you build up treasures in heaven. All they hear is the dreaded word “change” and that’s bad for them. They like the ways things are. But imagine being so stuck on staying the same that you don’t recognize that God was on earth in Jesus. He could heal all ailments simply by uttering a few words. The religious leaders missed this and they even called him an instrument of Satan (Matthew 12:24).
Take a moment and find a spiritual or earthly blessing from your life and give God praise for it. Then take a few minutes and think through if there are things in your life that cause you to not see God at work.
