Then one of the twelve, whose name was Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, “What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?” And they paid him thirty pieces of silver. And from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him. – Matthew 26:14-16 (NLT)
Thirty pieces of silver equals about $7,500 in our current economy. It was a decent sum of money but not life altering. Judas didn’t sell Jesus out so that he never had to work another day in his life. We do not know the internal workings of Judas so we don’t know why he betrayed Jesus. That’s not the point. Judas spent the majority of three years with Jesus and saw Jesus do miraculous healings and give powerful teachings. But, in the end he decided, Jesus wasn’t worth following any more.
Is Jesus more important to you than anything else? How do we continually grow in a relationship with him so that we safeguard ourselves from backsliding like Judas did?
